Health ConsultationWhen seniors turn 65, they benefit from government-sponsored Medicare in order to receive inexpensive healthcare. However, the coverage provided by Medicare is extremely limited. Basically, it covers vital services such as emergency room care. But what about the routine medical care that prevents you from being taken to the emergency room in the first place?

For more comprehensive healthcare, seniors should consider purchasing a supplemental Medicare plan. Before we talk about what that is, let’s look at the breakdown of Medicare coverage.

Part A (the subsidized portion) covers hospital insurance, including emergency and hospital treatment, nursing home care and hospice services. Seniors can enroll for this part free of charge because these services are required to treat life-threatening illnesses and injuries.

Part B covers medical insurance, including services and supplies used for medical diagnosis and treatment, routine doctor visits and preventative services.

Part C combines Parts A and B.

Part D covers prescription drugs.

Because one’s overall health encompasses more than just emergency treatment, it’s recommended that seniors consider buying a supplemental Medicare policy from an independent insurance agent. The additional coverage does require seniors to pay a premium, but it is significantly lower than traditional healthcare polices thanks to government sponsorship. Additionally, the premium is offset by the fact that visiting doctors will involve reduced out-of-pocket expenses.

What types of supplemental Medicare plans exist?

A Medicare Advantage Plan (Part C) combines coverage from Parts A and B. These plans can be custom designed to include Part D prescription drug coverage, along with vision and dental coverage.

A Medicare Supplemental Plan, also known as Medigap, offers comprehensive coverage in place of Part C. This plan has a higher premium than Part C, but co-payments are minimal with each doctor visit (making this a good option for seniors with a great need for medical care).
