Walking and FitnessThe success of your business directly depends on your employees’ hard work, therefore making it important that they stay healthy and fit. Desk jobs and vending machine junk food are contributing to the rising obesity epidemic, but you can take steps to improve the overall wellness of your staff. With unhealthy lifestyles, people are more likely to feel sluggish, fall ill and take sick days more frequently. However, healthier individuals are likely to have more stamina and have a better attendance record. How can you encourage the health of your employees?

While you can’t do much to change their habits at home, you can promote healthier choices in the workplace. It all starts with snacking. Are the vending machines stocked with chips, candy bars and sodas? Replace those items with healthier choices, such as water, iced tea, natural fruit juices, granola bars, dried fruit and nuts. Yes, your staff can still bring in their own junk food, but providing healthier snack foods makes it easier for them to choose healthier options.

Sitting at a desk for eight hours each day can wreak havoc on one’s body, from stiff, sore muscles to reduced blood flow. Encourage your staff to get up and stretch every hour and go for a short walk in the morning and afternoon. Even a 10 minute walk is enough to get your blood pumping once again and wake up your tired body. As a manager, lead by example and invite your team out for a walk. This doubles as a chance to get to know them better as well.

Additionally, form a partnership with a local gym in order to offer your staff discounted memberships. This mutually beneficial agreement encourages your employees to buy a membership thanks to the discounted price and helps the gym gain more customers. If your team is interested in getting into shape, you can even keep track of their progress and offer small rewards (like a gift card to a restaurant or free movie passes) once they achieve goals.

Promoting workplace wellness is a bit of a financial investment, but it doesn’t have to be pricey and it will almost certainly improve the health of your staff. And a healthier staff is able to continue working toward company goals for years to come.
