Coworkers meetingA new employee’s first day can be both exciting and nerve-wracking, so it’s up to you, as his or her manager, to make the induction as smooth as possible. The day starts the moment the employee walks in the door. Ensure that security knows about his or her arrival so there’s no hassle in the lobby. After a greeting, take the employee to human resources to fill out the appropriate paperwork. Throughout the rest of the day, and even the whole week, follow these tips to make new employees feel comfortable, welcomed and productive.

  • Before a new employee’s arrival, set up a clean workspace with a phone and computer. Have IT set up internet and email access so the employee can log in on his or her first day. Additionally, provide the employee with an access/ID card if necessary.

  • After the official hire (but before the start date), announce the new employee to management and the team on which he or she will be working. Inform staff of the new employee’s background and what his or her position will be.

  • Ask for a volunteer to be the new employee’s “buddy” for the first few weeks. The new employee can ask this buddy questions about staff, the company and any other general information.

  • Do something special for your new employee. Perhaps you’d like the team to sign a welcome card or go out for a group lunch that day. Anything that provides a warm welcome to a new face.

  • Take the new employee on an office tour. Introduce him or her to the staff and point out the bathroom, conference rooms and break room.

  • Plan a brief orientation in which you can go over the history of the company, company goals for the year, performance expectations, company policies and benefits, safety protocols and training.

  • Schedule training sessions with the appropriate staff members.

  • Keep a light schedule during the new employee’s first week so you can spend some time with him or her during that period of adjustment and learning.
